Lando joins final four in line for prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award
With previous winners graduating to glittering Formula 1, IndyCar and Endurance careers; including David Coulthard, Jenson Button, Dario Franchitti and Anthony Davidson. The exciting shortlist confirms Lando’s place as one of the top young drivers in the country.
A two-day test at Silverstone gives Lando the chance to prove his racing talent as he takes to the wheel of Formula 2, DTM Mercedes and McLaren GT3 machinery. A unique opportunity to test in a series of top-line vehicles in a bid to impress the judging panel, which this year includes BRDC president Derek Warwick, two-time British Touring Car champion Jason Plato, Le Mans 24hr Champion David Brabham. Alongside highly regarded McLaren personnel, circuit commentator Ian Titchmarsh, and Autosport's Kevin Turner and Scott Mitchell.
Nominated for the award by fans, journalists and racers alike, 16-year-old Lando’s impressive career so far, has boosted him to be the youngest nominee alongside Ricky Collard (20), Toby Sowery (20) and Sennan Fielding (20).
The illustrious award offers the winner a paid simulator role with McLaren for 2017, along with the exclusive opportunity to test in a McLaren Formula 1 car and be granted full British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) membership.
Encouraged by the challenge, Lando looks forward to the exciting opportunity to compete against some of the best young drivers in the UK:
"The aim was to win both championships and to be honest it went better than expected.
“Last year I wasn't eligible for the Award and it was something I wanted to do. Driving the DTM and GT and F2, I've never done anything like that before. The whole experience is pretty cool, just being a part of it.
“When you look at the history of people who have won it, most of them have gone on to do so much more right at the top, in F1 or the DTM for example, and that's my aim."
Rubbing shoulders with the British racing elite, Lando will be swapping his race suit for his sharpest black tie when the winner is announced at the Autosport Awards on 4th December.
